The Truth About Skincare Myths

There are so many myths out there about skincare. Some of them are has been clear enough but some are still mysterious. Below is 5 popular myths about skincare and the facts behind it :

1) Skin cannot breathe if you actually apply "too much" or "too thick" a layer of stuff on it.

FACT: Skin is not a separate organism, and there is no evidence pointing whatsoever to skin being able to breathe or not breathe. I have no idea where this came from, but when people use this expression, they often point to the tendency to get clogged pores for some people with oily or congested skin if they layer on anything. No, the skin does not need to breathe, because it is not a "body". Duhhhh....

2) You can remove wrinkles if you have them with a cream.

FACT: The truth is, wrinkling occurs in many forms and degrees. If one refers to things like dry patches which happen due to weather and changes in levels of dryness and humidity in the climate, yes, they can be addressed by a good cream, moisturizer or lotion. However, dry patches and blotchy patches of dehydration and weather-sensitivity are not the same as wrinkles, which are often formed by aging skin structure (the breakdown of collagen and elastin in the skin dermis itself), tensing muscles on the face which take a way longer time to relax after you tense them up via laughter, sadness, frowning and other types of expressions, and even breakdown in the layers of fat tissue beneath a person's face (o yes, did I ever tell you that people who are way way skinny age faster because they do not have the layer of fat underneath their skin to cushion and slow down the skin aging process within????....), DNA cell damage owing to sun exposure. Once formed, a wrinkle cannot be removed, and you can only technically reduce the appearance of these wrinkles by making them less obvious via lubricating the skin with some moisturizer. Think of it as coating the engine of a car which is really very old with the correct fuel, and then starting the engine again. The heating of the fuel allows the engine to give off a burst of energy, almost as if it is anew but just for that short moment.

3) Dryness of the skin will cause wrinkling.

FACT: Well, if you look at my former myth, and the response I have to it, then you have the answer. Dryness does not cause wrinkling. Wrinkling of the skin occurs at a way deeper level. You can be perfectly hydrated from within(by drinking loads of water) and without (by applying the best state-of-the-art moisturizer), and wrinkles can still form due to other triggers such as lifestyle factors (smoking, alcohol and a bad diet, which leads to decline in the collagen tissue in your skin), and so on.

4) The skin of the eye area is different from the skin of the face, and you need to get a separate eye cream product.

FACT: No. Human skin is human skin, and as long as your moisturizer is fragrance-free and irritant-free, you can apply it on your eye area's skin as well as your face.

5) What is natural and a plant extract when included in skincare products must be good for me.

FACT: Unfortunately, this is an extremely big lie which has been pushed around and taken for granted as truth by many people, and cosmetic companies do not take care to dismantle it themselves, thus leading to the greater promulgation of this tall tale. Granted in cases where the extraction of ingredients such as citric acid, lactic acid, malic acid, glycolic acid, salicylic acid and other types of fruit acids, and also antioxidants such as vitamins A,C, and E, as well as minerals, which are beneficial for the skin, is made possible via using fruits and other natural plants and subjecting them to chemical processes of extraction, we must also remember that what nature gives can also be dangerous and harmful if not 'processed' and 'made safe' for human use. Take for example lemon juice. In itself, when ingested into the body along with warm water, it turns alkaline in Ph, thus aiding in fighting off acidicizing of the body and its organs, and contributing to an anti-inflammatory effect on the body internally. However, lemon juice, when used directly on the face, actually causes stinging to the skin, and its acidic Ph (extremely low and lower than skin's own slightly weak Ph) can potentially irritate and break down the skin's own protective moisture-lipid barrier that prevents it from premature aging and environmental assault! What is good when ingested into the body might not always be good when applied to the skin. Beware!
